Favorite Toy

After spending many $$$ on assorted puppy toys, it turns out Maggie's favorite toy that keeps her occupied for more than five minutes is a cardboard wine carton that I cut in half.  She loves it as she can carry it across the room and roll with it.  She chews on it for quite awhile before she can actually chew off a bit of the cardboard.  At first she tried eating the cardboard but then discovered that it really didn't taste like chicken at all.

Miss Maggie Blue the terrorist!

Maggie in one of her, "I'm being a good girl" moments.

Maggie is starting to learn some manners but reverts to her terrorist mode every 15 minutes.  Her breeder neglected to tell me she was a member of Al Qaida.  She has enough energy for five other dogs but the good news is she has learned two commands, "sit" and "come".  She has partially learned, "no bite" but still can't resist chewing or biting something that looks very tempting like my furniture or rugs.  Mollie is still being very patient with her, but quite frankly, needs to give her a nip once in awhile to make her mind.

Finally, some ripe tomatoes!

My Red Robin tomatoes are finally ripening.  I have two really nice clusters turning red and lots of green ones to go.  I have 12 plants in various stages of growth and will move them outside soon.

Nice Catch!

Jon, Jamie, David and Dylan all drove to Lake Mary Ronan to fish the kokanee.  They caught 35 fish in one day!  Unfortunately, it was too windy and rainy the next day to be out on the lake.  While they were fishing Julie, Ben and I kept track of Maggie.  It was a fulltime job for three people!  Jon will smoke the fish we get a warm sunny day.  Maybe August?

Miss Maggie Blue comes home

On Friday Jon and I picked up Maggie and brought her home.  We have been very busy taking care of her.  We had a couple of stressful nights, but things are starting to settle down.  So far she has played in a mud puddle, tried chewing almost everything she finds and spends a lot of time exploring her new world.   Mollie is tolerating the little thing.  She really wishes she would go away, but is very polite.  Maggie is very respectful of Mollie, at least for the now.  She is a sweet dog and I'm sure she will be ready to take over some of Mollie's duties by fall.

Mollie says, "Do I really have to share my space with her?"

Birds in Paradise

All of these birds in the yard or the field today.  Just a few of the many. As you can see from the photos, they really like our cedar fence posts.  Their bird songs wake me up every morning and I am trying to learn some of them.  What a great way to start the day.

Strix varia  -  Barred Owl
The is the first Barred Owl that we have seen on our land.

Zonotrichia leucophrys -White Crowned Sparrow
They like safe brushy tangles that mix with grassy ground for foraging.  This little guy loved our Currant Bushes.

Squirrel Snack Time

This guy, a pine squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), has spent the last couple of days going up and down this Douglas Fir tree ( Pseudotsuga menziesii) eating the new cones.  He hangs by his back feet and picks off the tips of the branches, scampers back down the branch, and sits and eats the cones.  Just like eating an ice cream cone.

This is a close-up of his snack.  Looks pretty tasty, especially if you are on Day 4 of a no carb diet.

Thinking of Mothers......

Left to right:  Great Grandmother, Sophia who was born on the ship when her parents were coming to America from Switzerland; my Mother, Eileen, holding me; my Grandmother, Ella, who was born in England and came to Canada and the U.S. when she was a young girl.

It's still March here.

No photos to post.  The weather is still several degrees below normal and it's raining today.  We did have a couple of days with some sunshine and I got some manure on some of my flower beds.  Master Naturalist Class is keeping me very busy.  It's very interesting but taking up most of every Tuesday and Thursday.  Today's session was on Wetlands and we put on waders and got to walk in the mud and the water.

We had band practice last night and it was great to play some tunes.  I think it's been over a month since we have practiced.  We need to get ready for the big event on July 2nd.

I will be very happy when the weather decides to return to normal.  This has been a long winter it seems like we haven't had spring!
