Hike at Cloud's Ledge

Yesterday Ann, Neil, Jon and I led a hike at Cloud's Ledge.  It was a beautiful morning and a great day for a hike.

Unfortunately, the bear was behind the apple tree and my camera kept focusing on the apple limbs instead of the bear.  I never did get a clear shot.

Fly Like An Eagle

The eagle flew across the river and perched for me in this pine tree.

We were at the spot where the Kootenai River makes a 90 degree turn because it comes up against the Moyie Fault and a diorite sill.

 Kootenai Falls- 40,000 cfs right now

We went on an all day geology class on Sat. with Mark McFadden.  We learned a lot of new information about the glaciers, rock formations in our area and how to identify the formations.  We ended the class at Kootenai Falls.  We learned that the ripple marks there are most likely from oscillating wave action from a gigantic lake that stretched as far as the eye could see. The southern shoreline was at what is now Dillon, Montana.  At Kootenai Falls it was approxmately 20 feet deep.  The stromatolites that are underneath the swinging bridge at the falls where created by a layer of blue-green algae then a layer silt then another layer and so on..  When you are standing there you realize you are standing on rock created 1.4 billion years ago.  The same with the ripple marks.
